Project Details

This project involves coating four header pipes from a Daytona Coupe race car with a high-temperature stainless Cerakote C-Series finish to enhance durability and heat resistance under extreme racing conditions.

Race Car Headers

Cerakote C-Series Coating for a Daytona Coupe Race Car Header

For this project, we had the opportunity to coat the headers of a Daytona Coupe race car in C-Series Stainless Cerakote, a high-temperature ceramic coating designed to withstand extreme conditions up to 1,800°F. The headers consisted of four separate pipes, and the process required precision and attention to detail to ensure a durable, high-quality finish.

Preparation: The Most Crucial Step

Before applying the Cerakote, proper surface preparation was essential. The headers were first sent off for dipping and stripping to remove the original coating completely. Once returned, we soaked them in acetone to degrease any residual contaminants. To further clean the surface, we sandblasted each pipe, eliminating any remaining coating or debris.

Next, we baked the headers at 300°F for 60 minutes, a crucial step to release any trapped oils or impurities in the metal. After cooling, we performed a final wipe-down with acetone and used Scotch-Brite to smooth any rough areas. With the preparation complete, the headers were ready for coating.

Cerakote Application & Curing

We selected C-Series Cerakote because of its exceptional heat resistance and its ability to air-cure, eliminating the need for post-bake curing. Using our large paint booth and oven cart, we coated one header at a time, ensuring an even and precise finish. Once sprayed, each pipe was hung up to dry in a safe area.

After three days, the headers were dry enough for installation, but full curing required five days before the engine could be started.

This project took approximately 15 hours from start to finish, and the client was extremely pleased with the results. Another successful job showcasing our expertise in high-performance coating solutions!
