Custom AR-15 Cerakote: A Multicam Masterpiece

One of my favorite projects recently was a custom AR-15 assault rifle, cerakoted in a stunning multicam pattern. This job was a perfect blend of precision, creativity, and craftsmanship, and I’m excited to share the process.

The first step was to prepare the parts. I started by degreasing all components in acetone to remove any oils or contaminants. Then, I sandblasted each part to expose the bare metal, ensuring a clean surface for the Cerakote to adhere properly. After sandblasting, the parts were off-gassed at 250°F for 60 minutes to remove any residual moisture. Once the off-gassing process was complete, I wiped down the parts again with acetone, ensuring a completely clean surface before the coating process began.

For the design, I used Adobe Illustrator to create precise stencils, which were then cut with a vinyl plotter. For the coating, the barrel and nozzle were treated with C-Series Black for high-temperature protection, ensuring these critical areas could withstand heat during use. The hand grip and stock were coated in a tan color, providing a solid base for the pattern. The real showpiece, however, was the 3-color multicam pattern on the upper, lower, and receiver, featuring H-Series Crockidile, Midnight Bronze, and Flat Dark Earth for an authentic, military-grade camo look.

One of the techniques I explored during this job was the use of a 3000-grit sanding foam to smooth out the hard edges from the multiple layers of coating. To prevent scratching, I lightly wet the foam with water while sanding—this helped to preserve the finish and create a smooth transition between layers. It’s important to be cautious when sanding, as too much pressure can dull the finish.

From start to finish, this custom AR-15 cerakote job took approximately 14 hours, but the result was well worth the time and effort. The combination of a well-executed design and careful application makes this rifle one of my favorites to date.
